According to Chief Peak Legend, Chief Matilija was fatally wounded in the final battle against the Spanish invaders. In his dying wish, he requested to be laid at the peak of the mountain. Legend says that the mountain then took on the shape of his face, forever cementing the Chumash as the true natives of Ojai.
