The Word "Ojai" is derived from the Chumash word "Awhaye," which translates to "Moon" or "nest." The legend tells the story of Chief Matilija's daughter, Amatil, who fell in love with a brave Chumash warrior. Sadly, the warrior was killed in the final battle against the Spanish. Amatil's love was so fierce and unwavering that she lay upon her lover and eventually passed away. What remains of their love is a stunning flower, the Matilija Poppy, with pure white petals to symbolize their love and a bright yellow center representing its everlasting brilliance.
